Hey all! For my review I’ll be talking about TLC’s reality television series, “My 600 lb Life.”
The TV show has been on air since 2012 and each episode is different. Every episode follows the life of a different individual who is morbidly obese, weighing in at at least 600 lbs.
This show is super interesting in my opinion and I actually watch it regularly. It relates to my field because it deals with switching to healthy eating and incorporating exercise. Throughout the episode, the individual’s weight loss is tracked for a whole year. What I like about this show however, is that it focuses on more than just losing the weight.
The goal is to not just become smaller but to gain a better quality of life. It is crazy to me to see some of these people’s lives before their weight loss journey. In many cases people are bedridden at such young ages depending on spouses, family members, and even young children to take care of them.
Each individual on the show undergoes a gastric bypass surgery before starting their journey.
With this comes cutting out things like fast food and other junk and replacing it with balanced, nutritional meals as well as exercising. It is awesome to see how much confidence people have once they are able to move around again, socialize with friends, and play with their children. Being 600+ pounds is unimaginable for some people and just from what I’ve seen on this show, as one can expect, the journey to a healthy lifestyle is no walk in the park either.
This can honestly be a hard show to watch because it is very sad. In most cases people are so deeply depressed because of their situation. Watching these people better themselves makes it all worth it though.
I love that this show builds people up for their successes and there is a definite change in the happiness of these individuals. It is amazing how much a healthy lifestyle and exercise can benefit not only someone’s physical health but mental health as well.
